On January 11, the Connecticut Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus gathered virtually for its first meeting of the new year. Hosting a meeting early in the year falls in-line with the Caucus’s proven track record of prioritizing the interests of sportsmen and women in the months prior to the beginning of regular sessions.
In conjunction with the several Caucus members in attendance, Rick Jacobson, Bureau of Natural Resources Chief for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), and DEEP Deputy Commissioner Mason Trumble, took time to answer questions from the Caucus’s leadership bench and discussed some agency expectations for the coming year. The meeting’s conversation focused primarily on two areas: the possibility of having an early opener for the 2021 fishing season, as was done last year, and identifying ways to increase access and opportunities for the Nutmeg State’s sportsmen and women.
The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation looks forward to continuing its work alongside the Connecticut Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation and DEEP towards protecting and advancing the interests of Connecticut’s hunters, anglers, recreational shooters, and trappers.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
