On July 25, the Sun Journal published an op-ed written by Maine Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus member Senator James Dill, in which he provided a snapshot of the numerous sportsmen-related bills that were introduced during Maine’s regular sessions.
In several cases, Caucus member-driven legislation brought about advancements for sportsmen and women in the Pine Tree State, such as LD 27, which expanded crossbow use to Maine’s sportsmen and women during the 2020, 2021, and 2022 hunting seasons.
Caucus members also dedicated their efforts towards preventing anti-sportsmen legislation from progressing, such as LD 1071, which would have prohibited the selling or supplying of a “high-capacity magazine” from person to person. As was previously reported, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) was active alongside Caucus members in protecting and advancing hunting, angling, recreational shooting, and trapping within the State. CSF also assisted with hosting three Caucus luncheons, planning for a Fall event, and worked with Caucus members and key in-state partners in the formation of an Advisory Council.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
