Nebraska Commissioners Consider Expanding Mountain Lion Hunting Opportunities

Article Contact: Jake Gould,

Why it Matters: In August of 2023, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) expanded hunting opportunities for mountain lions by establishing the new Niobrara Unit. Commissioners are again looking to create more opportunities for hunters to hit the fields and attempt to harvest a mountain lion by potentially expanding into the Wildcat Hills Unit. The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) supports science-based management decisions for sustainable harvest and increased hunting opportunities.

Highlights:

  • Last week, the NGPC considered amendments to the State’s wildlife regulations, which would establish a mountain lion season by creating the Wildcat Hills Unit.
  • In August of 2023, mountain lion hunting opportunities were expanded when Commissioners approved the creation of the Niobrara Unit.
  • The establishment of Wildcat Hills Unit would be the third mountain lion hunting unit, joining the Pine Ridge and Niobrara Units.

While there are states that are aiming to reduce or completely remove hunting opportunities for mountain lions, including past legislative attempts from Nebraska Legislators, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners are again looking to expand these opportunities in the Cornhusker State. Science-based decisions allow for a sustainable harvest, while also maintaining a healthy mountain lion population.

Commissioners, during their June 21 meeting, considered amendments to Title 164 Chapter 4 of the state’s Wildlife Regulations, which would expand mountain lion hunting opportunities beginning in 2025. The Wildcat Hills Unit would join the Pine Ridge and Niobrara Units as the only other mountain lion hunting units available in Nebraska. If approved, the proposed unit would allow for the harvest of three mountain lions, with a sub-limit of two females.

Also considered during the meeting was increasing the total harvest number for the Pine Ridge and Niobrara Units. If approved, the Pine Ridge unit would see a harvest increase from four to twelve with a sub-limit of six females, while the Niobrara Unit would see a harvest increase from two to four with a sub-limit of two females.

CSF has long supported NGPC’s efforts to provide hunters with an opportunity to pursue mountain lions. Thanks to science-based management implemented by the state agency, and the support of sportsmen and women, Nebraska’s mountain lion population represents a shining example of conservation at work.
