North Dakota Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Holds Inaugural Meeting

The inaugural meeting of the North Dakota Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus was held on Thursday, April 25. With over 40 legislators in attendance, North Dakota officially became the 42nd state to organize a bipartisan legislative sportsmen’s caucus under the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. The leadership of the newly established caucus includes Senators Kelley Armstrong and Tyler Axness, and Representatives Scot Kelsh and Todd Porter.

In a state rich with outdoor heritage, the sportsmen and women of North Dakota now have an ally in their state legislature. The mission of the newly formed caucus is to: preserve and promote the traditional rights of North Dakota’s citizens to hunt, fish, and pursue outdoor activities; ensure that North Dakota’s sportsmen and women have reasonable access to public lands to enjoy outdoor pursuits; protect the investment of sportsmen and women in wildlife and fisheries management by safeguarding the integrity of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Safety trust funds and license revenue; support efforts to enhance multiple use habitat management for wildlife and fisheries;  recognize the importance of hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities to our nation’s economy; and support the maintenance and growth of outdoor related industries and activities.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
