Last week, the Michigan Natural Resources (NRC) Commission (Commission) met virtually to discuss regulations for the upcoming 2020 white-tailed deer hunting season. The NRC reviews these regulations every three years. However, after hearing from Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologists and law enforcement staff, the Commission vote was tabled until the July meeting. Some of the changes proposed at the June meeting can be found below. Many of these proposed regulatory changes are aimed at standardizing seasons and regulations across the state or region while allowing for increased opportunities for hunters. These changes would also make the regulations less confusing for hunters across the state. The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) is tracking these proposed changes and will monitor any others that may come before the NRC during their July meeting.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
