On May 2, Governor Chris Christie issued a conditional veto on New Jersey Senate Bill 977 and Senate Bill 978. The bills initially would have prohibited the import, export, sale, possession, and transport of “Big 5” African species and their parts (including taxidermy). Christie’s conditional veto will allow for the transport, import and export of “Big 5” species in New Jersey that are not remaining in the state, but will prohibit the possession of trophies staying in New Jersey. Further, the conditional veto will remove Cape buffalo from the list of prohibited species.
Gov. Christie’s conditional veto needs concurrence in both chambers before becoming law, which is expected to occur by May 26.
