On November 10, the Ohio House of Representatives Criminal Justice Committee discussed knife ban repeal legislation. Senate Bill 140 was previously discussed in the same committee in November 2019 after passing the Senate on a strong bipartisan vote (32-1).
Former Ohio Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Co-Chair Senator Joe Uecker was the primary sponsor of the legislation that would repeal the prohibition against carrying a concealed knife as a deadly weapon, if the knife is not used as a weapon. SB 140 would also remove the prohibition against the manufacture or sale of certain types of knives, many of which are legal to possess in Ohio.
The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation previously submitted a letter supporting the legislation and is coordinating with partners to advance the legislation this year.
The House Criminal Justice Committee is expected to vote on the bill on November 19.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades.
