On September 10, sportsmen and women from across the Keystone State were zeroed in with what was taking place in Harrisburg – the State’s capitol.
The Pennsylvania House Game and Fisheries Committee gathered to hold a public hearing on Senate Bill 147 (SB 147), legislation that would statutorily designate two Sundays where hunting would be allowed. One being held in the archery deer season, and one in the firearms deer seasons, and would authorize the Pennsylvania Game Commission to permit opportunities for Sunday hunting on a third Sunday of their choosing.
SB 147 is spearheaded by Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Co-Chairs Senator Daniel Laughlin and Senator Jim Brewster. For the past eight years Brent Miller, CSF’s Senior Director of Northeastern States, has been involved with the concerted effort to expand hunting opportunities within Pennsylvania, and attended the hearing on Tuesday. Miller also submitted written testimony in support of this legislation, outlining some of the many social and economic benefits that are produced when a state avails itself to Sunday hunting.
CSF will continue to track and advocate for SB 147 as it moves through the legislature and will provide updates on the bill’s advancements as they become available.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades.
