New Mexico

New Mexico’s public lands cover roughly 27 million acres, providing ample access to vast areas of game lands, wilderness, and other recreational areas. The state’s national forests, wildlife management areas, and BLM lands offer a wealth of hunting and fishing opportunities, with a variety of game species such as elk, mule deer, pronghorn, oryx,, bighorn sheep, quail, and mountain lions. For anglers, New Mexico is home to world-class rivers, such as the Rio Grande and the San Juan, as well as high mountain lakes and streams that are home to a variety of trout species. New Mexico’s hunting and fishing culture is deeply rooted in the state’s history, with a rich tradition of Native American hunting practices, Spanish Colonial ranching, and early American explorers. The state’s unique blend of cultures, including Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo influences, make New Mexico a truly distinctive destination for outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to its hunting and fishing opportunities, New Mexico is home to a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, including ancient Puebloan ruins, vibrant art scenes, and bustling cities steeped in history.

Why It Matters:  Legislation seeking to restrict firearms is often eventually used as a vector of attack for issues more directly pertaining to sportsmen and women, just as restrictions on hunting are often used as a vector of attack against Second Amendment rights.  Our issues are fundamentally intertwined given that firearms of every kind are…
