On April 25 – 26, the Kansas Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus hosted the 10th Annual Larry Magill Sportsmen’s Challenge. The first day consisted of a multi-species fishing tournament on Milford Lake, and the second day included a sporting clays shoot.
The event memorializes the late Larry Magill, a friend of sportsmen and women who helped organize the first Sportsmen’s Challenge with sportsman-legislators.
Speaker of the House and Kansas Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Co-Chair Representative Ray Merrick and Co-Chair Senator Ralph Ostmeyer organized this traditional event which occurs each year just prior to the veto session. With significant attendance from legislators and representatives from the sportsmen’s community, it was a great opportunity for relationship building with like-minded sportsmen and women in Kansas.
The Kansas Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus was formed in March 2008 and was the 35th state to join the National assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucus. More than 500,000 sportsmen and women enjoy hunting and fishing in the Sunflower State, spending more than $625 million each year.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
