On January 23, members of the Delaware Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus gathered with Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) Senior Director, Northeastern States Brent Miller and Mid-Atlantic States Coordinator Kara Hartman, various representatives from Delaware’s sportsmen’s community, staff from Governor Sportsmen’s Caucus Member Governor John Carney’s office, staff from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Division of Fish & Wildlife, and others to discuss legislative priorities for the 2018 session.
Director Saveikis of the Division of Fish & Wildlife also provided updates on harvest numbers and license sales statistics from the previous season, among other topics.
Led by Caucus Co-Chairs, Representative Jeff Spiegelman, Senator Bruce Ennis, and Representative William Carson, the meeting provided attendees the opportunity to engage in a robust discussion on new legislative priorities and various other sportsmen’s-related topics including: deer harvest numbers, mallard limits, hunting license fee revenue, emerging hunting technologies, venison donation, and access issues.
The Delaware Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus will be hosting regular policy meetings throughout the session, all of which are open to the public. The next scheduled meeting is on Thursday, March 22 at 11:30 a.m. in the House Majority Hearing Room of Legislative Hall, Dover, Delaware.
Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades.
