Michigan: State Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Members to Gather for Annual Summit

State legislators from around the country will gather next week for the 14th Annual National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC) Sportsman-Legislator Summit in Acme, Michigan.

This annual conference brings together NASC members with outdoor industry leaders, state and federal natural resource agency representatives, and other sportsmen’s and conservation organizations from across the country. Themed, “”Celebrating the American System of Conservation Funding: 80 Years of Success,” this year’s agenda will focus on a wide variety of topics and how each topic impacts the state-level conservation funding generated by America’s sportsmen and women. Hunters and anglers provide the vast majority of our nation’s conservation funds in a “user pays, public benefits” model known as the American System of Conservation Funding.

Attendees will participate in three days of policy sessions focused on hunting, angling, and other outdoor recreation and conservation-related issues. Sessions at this year’s Summit will include: hunter and angler recruitment, retention and reactivation; an overview of firearm and ammunition sales impact on conservation funding; the Modern Fish Act; the 2018 Farm Bill reauthorization; the role of active forest management in enhancing sporting opportunities; protecting our waterways from invasive species; and other important issues facing America’s hunters and anglers.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
