Mississippi Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Welcomes New Co-Chairs

Contact: Mark Lance, Southeastern States Coordinator

Recently, the bicameral and bipartisan Mississippi Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus (Caucus) announced the addition of two new Caucus Co-Chairs, Senator Sampson Jackson and Senator Neil Whaley.

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation welcomes Senator Jackson and Senator Whaley to their leadership roles for the Caucus. Their guidance and expertise, alongside Caucus Co-Chair and National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses Executive Council Member Representative Scott Bounds, Caucus Co-Chair Representative Karl Gibbs, and Governor’s Sportsmen’s Caucus Member Governor Tate Reeves, will play an important role protecting and advancing the Magnolia State’s sporting heritage.

“I’m excited to work with my fellow Caucus Co-Chairs leading the Mississippi Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus as we work to protect our state’s strong sporting traditions,”” said Senator Jackson.

“I am honored to help lead the Mississippi Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus and look forward to working with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the Mississippi sportsmen’s community to advance policies that benefit the sportsmen and women in our state, said Senator Whaley.

A number of pro-sportsmen’s bills were introduced in Mississippi this year. Notably, the Caucus has been instrumental advancing legislation to establish the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund which would support conservation initiatives on private and public lands in the state.

Mississippi’s 782,000 sportsmen and women contribute more than $3.02 billion to the state’s economy and in 2019 generated more than $35.52 million for state-based conservation through the American System of Conservation Funding.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
