Virginia: Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation Supports Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt

Contact: John Culclasure, Central Appalachian States Manager

On April 27, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) participated in the 5th Annual Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt.

A partnership between the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia, the One Shot raises funds to support Virginia’s hunting heritage through land acquisitions and youth engagement via the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program. The grant program provides funding to schools, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to support initiatives that connect youth to the outdoors. In 2018, the Grant Program funded 34 projects to support hunter recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) programs in the Commonwealth.

CSF contributed as a sponsor of the One Shot, and CSF Marketing and Communications Assistant Taylor Bissonette represented CSF at the Hunter/Guide Dinner on Friday as well as the Hunting Heritage Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday. Bissonette also participated in the turkey hunt Saturday morning.

“This was our most successful One Shot to date. We received tremendous support from partners across the Commonwealth, and it’s great seeing so many folks supporting Virginia’s outdoor heritage,” said Jenny West, Executive Director of the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
