Anti-Hunting Groups Petition for Non-Science-Based Ban on Traditional Ammo

Recently, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), along with 16 other organizations and individuals, filed a petition requesting that the Department of Interior ban the use of traditional ammunition made with lead components and require that only the use of alternative ammunition made with metals be permitted on lands managed by the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

On July 23, 33 sportsmen’s and other conservation organizations from the American Wildlife Conservation Partners, including the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, sent a letter to Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell, stating: “It (the petition) is quite simply an attempt to drive hunters, and subsequently recreational target shooters, off of federal public lands. It is unnecessary, has no basis in sound science and should be rejected by the Department.”

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
