On May 18, the Michigan Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus hosted their second Annual Field Day and Wild Game Dinner. Over 20 Caucus members were joined by representatives from more than a dozen hunting, angling, recreational shooting, and trapping organizations. The bipartisan, bicameral group of legislators came together for an opportunity to practice target shooting, bass fishing techniques and fly casting. Following the afternoon of outdoor activities, a wild game dinner was served by Gourmet Gone Wild accompanied by a presentation on hunter recruitment, retention, and reactivation.
During the dinner, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation presented Senator Mike Green, National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC) Executive Council Member and Michigan Caucus Co-Chair, with a NASC Executive Council jacket for his leadership and dedication to our sporting heritage. Founded in 2004 by CSF, NASC facilitates the interaction and idea exchange among state caucus leaders and the outdoor community.
“Michigan’s second annual Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus Field Day and Wild Game Dinner was a huge success. This is an educational event where legislators get to experience firsthand a variety of outdoor activities ranging from fly fishing lessons and duck calling to clay shooting, archery, and trapping,” said Senator Green. “This is a great event that exposes lawmakers to a wide variety of outdoor activities.”

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
