Pennsylvania: GSC Member Governor Wolf Signs Hunting Technology Bill

Contact: Brent Miller, Senior Director, Northeastern States and States Program Administrator

On July 1, Governor Tom Wolf, a Member of the bipartisan Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, signed HB 1188 into law. The Governor’s approval of the bill, which was supported by many members of the bipartisan and bicameral Pennsylvania Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, follows strong bipartisan votes in both chambers. As a result of this legislation, the Pennsylvania Game Commission will now have the regulatory authority to permit the use of night vision, thermal optics, and similar devices for the nighttime hunting of predators. Sportsmen and women in Pennsylvania may soon be able to use night vision, thermal optics, and similar devices for the nighttime hunting of predators.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
