West Virginia:  Governor’s One Shot Hunt Supports Local Food Shelters

On October 19-21, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) Southeastern States Director Bee Frederick and Central Appalachian States Coordinator John Culclasure attended the 10th Annual Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Hosted by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, Co-Chair of the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, this hunt is an annual fundraiser for the Hunters Helping the Hungry program in West Virginia.

Coordinated by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Hunters Helping the Hungry program is one of the state’s successful Game Meat Programs which work with processors and hunters to provide venison to local food shelters. Venison harvested during the Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt is donated to food shelters, and the funds raised at the event support food shelters across the state through the administration of the Mountaineer Food Bank.

Director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Bob Fala remarked, “With our flood event this year on top of the state of the economy, the Hunters Helping the Hungry program has been a blessing for the citizens of West Virginia, and we sincerely appreciate the support of our partners to provide to funds for this much needed program.”

CSF supports policies that facilitate game programs throughout the country.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
