New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Executive Director Nominee Receives Public Hearing

Contact: Joe Mullin, New England States Senior Coordinator

On July 30, the New Hampshire Executive Council held a public hearing to discuss the recommendation of Scott Mason to serve as the next Executive Director for the New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) Department.

The hearing resulted after Governor Chris Sununu, Member of the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, nominated Mason for this role on June 9. In accordance with New Hampshire statute (RSA 206:8), a nominee for the position of Executive Director (which carries a term of four years) must receive an appointment from both the Governor and Executive Council. Leading up to this hearing, several Co-Chairs of the bipartisan and bicameral New Hampshire Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus submitted a letter of support for Mason’s nomination for consideration by the Executive Council.

Out of the over 40 individuals who testified at the public hearing, an overwhelming majority were in favor of Scott Mason serving as the next Executive Director. Itis possible that the New Hampshire Executive Council will hold a vote on the matter during its next meeting on August 5.

Per the Governor’s official press release, he thanked outgoing NHFG Department Director Glenn Normandeau for his longstanding dedication to service, as well as “to the Fish and Game Commission for bringing Scott’s nomination” forward.

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation will continue to provide updates as they are made available. For more information on the New Hampshire Executive Council, please follow this link.

Studies conducted at both the state and federal level have found that the number of hunters and trappers have been on a generally declining trend over the past several decades. To increase recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters and trappers, which initiative do you think would have the greatest impact?
